Good Morning. Christ is risen.
Let’s start by getting in a position that engages your whole body. If it is morning, maybe you want to fix yourself a cup of coffee. But at the very least, find a place wherever you are that is quiet, distraction free (“Do Not Disturb” mode on), feet on the ground and palms up as a sign of surrender to God.
(Set a timer for 3-5 minutes)
Lets start with the oldest breath prayer that we know of in church history that comes from Philippians 2 and Luke 18:
“Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Control your breathing. Slow. Be aware of the tension you are feeling.
Breathe in: “Jesus.”
Breathe out: “have mercy on me, a sinner.”
(Repeat this for the next 3 or so minutes)
As you do this, cast all thoughts away but the Lord. Maybe have a journal to write down your random thoughts as a way to put them a way for later. This present moment is for Jesus. Quiet your soul and join the psalmist when he says “My soul waits.”
Make notes of the ways your heart is responding as you welcome him to speak through his Word.
(5 Minutes)
Read John 12:1-11
Make observations. Highlight important phrases. Let the Word wash over.
As you sit in silence and prayerful reflection, conclude at the appropriate time with this prayer:
(1-3 Minutes)
Prayer
O Lord, just like Mary did, we pour out our love and devotion to You without reservation. Free our hearts more and more to love you. Teach us to offer our best to You, even if it means sacrifice. Let the fragrance of our worship fill the places we inhabit, drawing others to You. Amen.
